Day 1: Explore the Ballestas Islands, Relax at a Desert Oasis, and Travel to Nazca
Wake up for a pre-dawn transfer from your hotel in Lima to the bus station for a red-eye drive to the seaside town of El Chaco. From the station, you’ll make a short walk to the jetty for your transfer by speedboat to the Ballestas Islands.
On the way to the Ballestas Islands, you’ll pass the mysterious “El Candelabro” geoglyph, archaeological mysteries whose origins are still unknown to archaeologists. Upon arrival to the islands, your tour will last approximately 2 hours. Circle the islands for outstanding views of the seal and penguin colonies, as well as thousands of seabirds that inhabit the fertile shores.
Return to the port for lunch at a beach-side restaurant, then travel onward through the city of Ica. (Travelers who choose private transportation at check-out may opt to visit a local vineyard.)
In the afternoon,visit the Huacachina Oasis and lagoon. Try your hand at sandboarding down the magnificent dunes, explore the area, or relax at the dreamy desert lagoon. Later in the evening, travel onward to Nazca. You’ll arrive at approximately 19:00 pm and have the change to attend a lecture on the history of the mysterious line and on pre-Inca astronomy.
Day 2: Fly over the Nazca Lines and Return to Lima
After breakfast that hotel, set out for your morning excursion to the outstanding Nazca Lines. View the enigmatic wonders from a light aircraft and be amazed by the precision and detail of these millennia-old designs.
After your once-in-a-lifetime flight, travel to the nearby ancient Nazca cemetery to learn more about these ancient peoples, then visit a traditional pottery factory where locals still uphold ancient techniques to make stunning ceramics. In the early evening, you’ll set out along the Pan-American Highway for the long (7-hour) trip back to Lima.
