Itinerary

Day 1: International Arrival in Lima

A representative will meet with you at International Lima Airport and accompany you to your hotel. There are no planned activities, so check into the hotel and rest up for you Machu Picchu Amazon Basin trip.

Day 2: Lima Sightseeing Tour

After breakfast at the hotel, you’ll have the morning free to relax. It is recommended you rest up for the Machu Picchu Amazon Basin journey ahead.

After grabbing lunch on your own 2:30 pm, you will be picked you up from the hotel for a guided tour to the “City of Kings.” This excursion offers the best of Lima from all of its three historical periods: pre-Hispanic, colonial and contemporary.

Day 3: Flight to Cusco – Cusco Sightseeing Tour

You’ll enjoy breakfast in the hotel before heading to Lima airport for your flight to Cusco. You’ll be welcomed upon arrival and transported to your hotel. The morning will be free for you to relax and acclimate.

You will be picked up from the hotel at 1:30 pm to tour the Koricancha (Temple of Sun), a very important Inca shrine. Later, you’ll visit the impressive Cathedral in the main square. The tour continues in Sacsayhuaman on a hill that looms over the city. Then, you’ll visit Qenqo, a singular limestone outcrop used for religious purposes. Finally, the tour ends with a visit to Puca Pucara and Tambomachay.

Day 4: Sacred Valley Tour

After breakfast at the hotel, you’ll have a full day visit to the impressive Sacred Valley of the Incas as well as the Pisaq and Ollantaytambo archaeological sites. First, you’ll stop at the village of Qorao to take pictures of the gorgeous landscapes. Then you’ll head to Pisaq, an archaeological site and Indian market.

This native town was once where “exchange transactions” took place. In this type of transaction, customers would exchange one good for another instead of using currency. On Sunday, the main attraction is a mass celebrated in Quechua and conducted in Spanish. It is attended by the mayors and their attendants who play traditional musical instruments called “pututos.”

After a typical Peruvian lunch in the Sacred Valley, you’ll visit the Inca Fortress of Ollantaytambo that once protected the entrance to this part of the Valley from possible invasion from the other tribes. Originally the royal estate of Emperor Pachakuteq during the Inca Empire, this site later served as a stronghold for Manco Inca Yupanqui in the Inca’s final rebellion against the Spanish. In the afternoon, you’ll head back to Cusco.

Day 5: Train to Aguas Calientes & Mandor Valley Birdwatching

You will head to the nearby train station after breakfast. From there, you will travel for about 3.5 hours surrounded by gorgeous views en route to Aguas Calientes and the mysterious lost Inca city of Machu Picchu.

Once in Aguas Calientes, you will be transported to the hotel to check in. You’ll have lunch at a restaurant in Aguas Calientes before leaving for a birdwatching excursion to Mandor Valley.  Along the way, we will also visit a waterfall and take in beautiful views of the river. After relaxing for a bit, you will walk back to the hotel in the evening with the shadows of Machu Picchu looming behind you.

Day 6: Full Day Machu Picchu & Back to Cusco
After breakfast, you’ll partake in one of the most anxiously awaited tours of the Machu Picchu Amazon Basin trip: a full day excursion to Machu Picchu. Here you will embark on a guided tour that features all the main attractions. You’ll visit the Main Plaza, the Circular Tower, the Sacred Sun Dial, the Royal Quarters, and the Temple of the Three Windows as well as houses, warehouses, and a large central square connected by narrow roads and steps and surrounded by terraces cut into the mountain side. After the tour, you’ll have time to explore at your own pace.

Additionally, you’ll have the chance to take an hour walk up to the Sun Gate (Inti Punku) or climb to the top of Wayna Picchu which offers an incredible view of the whole sanctuary. You’ll head back to Cusco by train in the afternoon.

Day 7: Flight to Puerto Maldonado – Tambopata Lodge

After breakfast at the hotel, transportation will be provided for you to the Lima airport to catch your flight to Puerto Maldonado. Upon arrival, staff will help you get settled in. Later,  you’ll take a drive along a dirt road to the the port town of Infierno. Here, you will board a boat and head down the Tambopata River to the lodge inside the buffer zone of the Tambopata Candamo and the Bahuaja Sonene National Park.

In the afternoon, the guide will lead you on a walk to observe the flora and fauna near the lodge. You will see magnificent flora such as cañabravales, cecropias, and ficus. You will also have the chance to see diverse kinds of birds such as weaving birds, garzas, macaws, parrots, and toucans.

Day 8: Parrot Clay Lick – Native Community – Tres Chimbadas Oxbow Lake

After an early breakfast, you’ll head out on a boat to bird watch at the “La Torre” clay lick on the banks of the Tambopata River.

Then, your Machu Picchu Amazon basin tour will offer you a glimpse into local life with a visit a native community farm. A local farmer will teach you and about farming and will introduce you to several Amazonian fruits.

In the afternoon, you’ll head down the river to start a less than one hour walk to the Tres Chimbadas Lake. On the lake we will board a traditional catamarán to travel around the lake that a family of giant river otters calls home.You will also have the chance to see the famous pirana fish during a traditional fishing demonstration.

Day 9: Cocococha Oxbow Lake

Today, you’ll visit the marvelous Cocococha Lake in the Tambopata National Reserve. With its high biodiversity, beautiful landscape, and isolated position, the lake is an important habitat and food source for various species. Emblematic endangered species of the Amazon are able to reproduce and thrive here.

At dusk, your guide will accompany you on a boat trip to enjoy the sounds of night, a potential storm or the southern constellations of the night sky. We will take a reflector with us in the boat just in case we come across the night time activity of the caiman, capybaras, chotacabras in the Tambopata River.

Day 10: Departure from Lodge – Flight to Lima – Connect at International Flight

After breakfast, you will head back to the tour group’s office in Puerto Maldonado before leaving for the airport. The time of departure will vary depending on airline schedules, but it will mark the end of your Machu Picchu Amazon Basin adventure. You’ll fly to Lima where you can connect to your flight home.
