Escape the typical tourist experience to immerse yourself in the fascinating culture and history of Peru in a variety of ways. The Tour Peru Off the Beaten Path will take you to some of Peru’s best archaeological sites not yet discovered by the masses. You’ll also gain knowledge about present-day Peru’s rapidly growing organic coffee and cacao trades as well as its world-famous artisan crafts. Furthermore, you’ll learn more about the biggest environmental and social projects that are making a difference for Peru’s endangered nature and disadvantaged groups. Finally, you’ll have the opportunity to swap stories with some of the locals that you meet during homestays or while you’re learning how to make traditional “caballitos” boats.

Your accommodations include 2 homestays and are mid-range, family-owned places. Additionally, your transportation is private except for one overnight public bus transfer between Cajamarca and Leymebamba.

From your landing in Trujillo until your take-off in Tarapoto, you’ll be accompanied by a bilingual tour guide as well as by several local guides with extensive specialized knowledge. This way you can just relax and enjoy the trip without having to worry about the logistics. If you speak Spanish and prefer to tour Peru by yourself, you have this option as well.


10 Days/9 Nights


Day 1: Lima – Trujillo

We’ll pick you up from the airport and take you to freshen up and enjoy breakfast at your hotel. Later we will head out to see the famous Sun and Moon Temples (La Huaca del Sol y la Huaca de la Luna). After a delicious lunch on the beach, we’ll take a short ride in a Caballito de Totora, a reed boat that fisherman in Peru have used for the last several thousand years. You’ll even try your hand at making one!

Your last stop of the day is to Fair Mail, an association that helps youths get photography experience and helps them in their studies, health, and quality of life. Then, they sell the photos on the internet and receive part of the profit.

Day 2: Trujillo (Chan Chan)

Today you’ll visit the grand archaeological site of Chan Chan (the largest city constructed in pre-colonial America) as well as the archaeological complex El Brujo.

Day 3: Trujillo – Cajamarca

After breakfast, you will take a 4.5 hour trip in private transportation to Cajamarca. Here, you’ll have lunch and explore the charming colonial city. We’ll also take you to a local project that focuses on families of children with Down Syndrome. You’ll spend the night in a hotel that is known for employing single mothers and young people with Down Syndrome.

Day 4: Cajamarca – Leymebamba

Today’s agenda includes a visit to Cumbe Mayo. It is one of South America’s oldest man-made structures known for its well-preserved aqueduct. We’ll also visit the Ventanillas de Otuzco, windows carved out of the rocks which form part of a mysterious cemetery from the Cajamarca culture.  At night, we’ll take a 5.5. hour bus ride to Leymebamba.

Day 5: Leymebamba 

After breakfast and freshening up at the hotel, you’ll visit an extraordinary woodcarver’s workshop where work inspired by local archaeological discoveries is created. Then we will learn about another kind of local art: the tradition of tinting and weaving wool. The women at the local cooperative have a very unique way of maintaining this tradition. We don’t want to spoil it for you though so you’ll have to go and find out for yourself! After lunch at a restaurant, we’ll head to Milpuc, a private conservation area, where you’ll spend the night at our friend Perico and his mother’s house.

Day 6: Leymebamba – Chachapoyas (Kuelap)

Today, you’ll find out the reason they call Kuelap “the new Machu Picchu.” The pre-Incan Chachapoya people, also known as the Warriors of the Clouds, built the complex. In present-day, it consists of the remains of over 400 round houses. Later we will have lunch at a local restaurant before continuing on to Chachapoyas.

Day 7: Chachapoyas – Mendoza  – Chachapoyas

Mendoza is known for producing several grand products such as delicious organic coffee and panela (unrefined sugar from sugar cane). We will participate in several steps of the production process as a coffee-producing family will walk us through it. After lunch with the family, we’ll continue our coffee tour with a visit to a local cooperative that will teach us about the selection process and exportation. We’ll even get to sample their outstanding coffee!

Day 8: Chachapoyas – Tarapoto

We will provide lunch and private transportation to Tarapoto. Once we arrive, you’ll have the afternoon free to explore the city on your own.

Day 9: Tarapoto

Today, you’ll visit a rural project on agritourism and ecotourism that concentrates on cacao production and medicinal plants. The project also provides locals with environmental education and training in organic production. In the afternoon, you’ll visit some of the traditional Amazonian art workshops. Later, you’ll spend the night in cabins that are part of a tourism project.

Day 10: Tarapoto – Lima

After breakfast, we will bring you to the airport for a flight to Lima.

Day 1: Historical Center and Food tour

Go on a guided visit to the colonial center of Lima. Then, go on a food and market tour where you’ll learn more about the world-famous, delicious Peruvian cuisine!

Day 2: Full-day Lima Local Communities Tour

We’ll visit a social project where we will educate ourselves about daily life in this harsh environment by participating in a responsible intercultural exchange with the locals.
