On this Locally-Operated Peru Immersive Homestay, Discover the Living Cultural Heritage of the Inca

On this authentic and locally-operated experience with the small mountain community of Kacllaraccay, discover Peru’s cultural identity with a 3-day homestay and immersive tour. The village is comprised of 15 families who uphold and preserve traditional Inca traditions, customs, and trades.

On this Peru immersive experience, prepare meals and eat with a gracious local family, learn about traditional farming practices and work alongside your hosts, and hike to the Moray Inca Archaeological Site and ancient pre-Inca Maras Salt Mine for unique tours and experiences with your guides.

Your guides studied English and Tourism at university, and are excited to respectfully and thoughtfully share their culture and cultural heritage as a means of celebrating Peru’s pre-Inca roots, and supporting local communities. Your guides speak Spanish, Quechua, and English and will also serve as translators during your trip.

Day 0: Meet your Guide
The night before your trip to Kacllaraccay, you’ll meet your knowledgeable, bilingual guide and receive an cultural briefing of your upcoming experience. Your guide will introduce you to cultural norms, economy and work-life, and the language of your hosts in Kacllaraccay. You’ll be provided with information and advice for entering a new cultural space comfortably and respectfully.

Day 1: Discover Kacllaraccay
Your immersive Peru experience will begin with hotel pick-up in Cusco and transfer by car into the Andes Mountains, to the small community of Kacllaraccay. Here lives a small Quechua-speaking community of 15 families that upholds pre-Hispanic traditions and customs.

Upon arrival to Kacllaraccay, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the community with your local guide. For lunch and dinner, a gracious local host will welcome you into their home for a traditional meal. In the evening, you’ll stay with your host family.

Day 2: Participate in Local Customs and Activities
Today, participate in daily activities for the residents of Kacllaraccay — from farming, to caring for animals, to preparing food. You’ll work alongside and learn from your hosts, and gain insight into the rich cultural heritage that Kacllaraccay’s uphol deep in Peru’s mountains.

Today, enjoy breakfast, lunch, and dinner with your hosts, and stay overnight in a local home.

Day 3: Explore the Inca Moray Salt Mines
Today, enjoy a final breakfast with your host family before setting out for a spectacular and scenic 1-hour hike to the Moray Inca archaeological site and Maras salt mine.

Moray is an outstanding display of Inca technology, architecture, and art. The fascinating terraced circles descend over 300 feet (1oo meters) and cause dramatic temperature changes at each level. The terraced circles may have been used for agricultural experimentation, but their unique beauty and sophisticated design inspire the imagination.

After exploring the Moray terraces, you’ll continue onward to the ancient Maras salt mines. The 3,000+ small salt evaporation pools were designed by the Inca, and the area has been mined for salt for over 1,000 years. Explore the spectacular landscape and admire the sun glistening off each pool, as you enjoy a tour with your professional, bilingual guide.

Pause under a backdrop of mountains and sun to enjoy a packed lunch before setting out for your return trip to Cusco. Your driver will drop you off at your hotel by early evening.

Important Notes

Professional Guides: All of our guides grew up locally, and have an intimate knowledge of Cusco and the surrounding countryside. All guides studied English and Tourism at university and have a true passion for sharing their history and cultural heritage. Guides are also certified in First Aid.

Cultural Briefing: Before your trip, you’ll enjoy an informative briefing with your guide and receive information and suggestions for entering a new cultural space.

Homestay Accommodation: For the duration of your trip, you’ll stay in a remote house made by locals using loose soil as mud bricks, and a tiled roof. Small clay bulls are set on top of the roof as part of local farming tradition.

Cultural Information

Food and Farming: The village of Kacllaraccay participates in a crop exchange with other local farmers at a weekly Sunday produce market.

Religion: Most of the families from Kacllaraccay are Catholic, and to travel to several local missions led by Cusco priests.

Celebrations: There are several major festivals each year. Most notably, locals celebrate the holy days of patron saints with an 8-day festival. For celebrations, locals drink a famous Inca beer made of fermented corn, and eat roasted guinea pig.
