Visit the ancient Inca site of Huchuy Qosco and discover its historical background and importance as you trek through the Sacred Valley to the lost Incan city. Your Machu Picchu Sacred Valley Trek will show you the rarely seen natural wonders of the region, and culminate in the explorer’s paradise of Machu Picchu.
3 Days/2 Nights
Day 1: Cusco – Tambomachay and Qenko.
Our hike will begin close to the Inca site of Tambomachay and will lead us through the vast grassland of the Andean puma. We will ascend a couple of mountain passes and pass through small communities, rivers, and lakes. Later that afternoon, we will arrive to the village of Qenko nearby Lake Qoricocha (“Golden Water”). Mainly farmers and herders call these grassland villages home. This area is not a common tourist destination, but its view of the Milky Way at night is one of its main highlights for all of our trekkers.
Day 2: Huchuy Qosco – Sacred valley and Aguas Calientes
Today we will continue our hike towards Huchuy Qosqo. Along the way, we will have the opportunity to talk with the local villagers and learn about their lives. Upon our arrival to the Inca site of Huchuy Qosco, our tour guide will explain to us the historical background and importance of these ruins. After our exploration of Huchuy Qosqo, we will continue our descent along an ancient Inca Trail that will lead us through a beautiful ravine full of birds and exotic plants. We will have lunch in Lares and take a well-deserved break before we board our ride to Ollantaytambo where we will catch the train to Aguas Calientes.
Day 3: Machu Picchu!
We’ll start the day bright and early at 4:00 am. After breakfast, we will board a bus for a short, 30-minute ride to Machu Picchu. We will enjoy a wonderful and educational 2-hour tour around this beautiful Inca site. After the tour, you may continue exploring Machu Picchu or you may climb the Huayna Picchu mountain (with prior reservation).
Whichever you choose, your guide will give you your train tickets. The train usually leaves about 2:55 pm and arrives back in Cusco at 7:45 pm, but this is subject to change. As an extra option, you can choose to spend one more night in Aguas Calientes to visit the thermal springs and even further explore Machu Picchu.
