On this 15-day northern Peru birding tour, you’ll travel with an expert naturalist across the region’s highlands and river valleys. You’ll encounter hundreds of species, get singular looks at endemic birds unique to the region (home to the Marvelous Spatuletail!), add to your Life List, and enjoy outstanding birding each day.
Itinerary
Your itinerary will include bird lists for each location. Bird lists are not definitive. They include native species to each habitat. Like with any experience exploring the natural world, there are no definites as to which species you will come across — and there are always great surprises.
Day 1: CHICLAYO- BOSQUE POMAC – OLMOS
You’ll begin your tour traveling from Chiclayo to the dry forests of Bosque Pomac.
After explore the area you will continue towards your hotel on Jaen. On the way, you’ll pull over at a few local hotspots to add a few more birds to the list.

Day 3: JAEN – POMACOCHAS OR FLORIDA
Today, you’ll travel to Pomacochas, a marshy lakeside habitat. As you travel, you’ll pass changing landscapes and habitats and get a great look at a variety of species.

Day 4: POMACOCHAS- ABRA PATRICIA
Today, you’ll look for an elusive Rusty-tinged Antpitta (Grallaria przewalskii), and the Russet mantled Softail (Thripophaga berlepschi). You’ll spend 2 nights at your lodge in Abra Patricia, for the maximum likelihood you’ll spot the area’s lesser-seen inhabitants.

Day 5: ABRA PATRICIA LODGE
Today, you’ll travel under the thick, misty canopies of a cloud forest near Abra Patricia.
You will spend the night at Rioja in a local hotel.
Day 7: RIOJA- MOYOBAMBA
Today, you’ll travel to the humid, tropical region of Moyobamba. On the bluffs, you’ll get a great look at many of Northern Peru’s endemic birds.

In the afternoon you’ll get the opportunity to see up to 18 species of hummingbirds that feed at the feeders outside the lodge. The lodge also includes a botanical garden of orchids, where you’ll see over 600 species of the delicate flower.
After dinner, you’ll head out into the night for an Owl Prowl.

Day 9: MISKIYAQUILLO – TARAPOTO
In the morning, you’ll get another chance to watch hummingbirds feed near the lodge. Later, you’ll travel to the Amazonian cloud forests of Tarapoto. With abundant palms and waterfalls, you’ll get a new birding experience.
Day 10: TARAPOTO – ABRA PATRICIA
Today, you’ll travel to small micro-climates around Tarapotp, where you’ll get a full morning seeing and hearing new species.

You will return to Tarapoto for lunch and then head towards Abra Patricia for the night.
Day 11: ABRA PATRICIA – LEIMEBAMBA
The drive from Abra Patricia to Leimebamba is rich with diverse landscapes and habitats.
At the lodge at Leimebamba, get a great look at hummingbirds at the feeders.

Today, you’ll travel to Canyon of the Condors, where you’ll see Peru’s high altitude birds and get an awesome look at birds of prey hovering over the canyon in search of prey.
Day 14: CELENDIN – CAJAMARCA
On the way to Cajamarca, you’ll stop at Cruz Conga, a scrubby semi-arid region great for spotting endemic birds.
