Pre-trek briefing
The day before you begin your Rainbow Mountain overnight trek, your guide will meet you at your hotel (or consult via video-chat) for a pre-trek briefing. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to ask any last-minute questions and make final preparations.

Day 1: Trek from Quesiuno to Llamachimpana
You’ll begin your Rainbow Mountain overnight trek at 4:30 am with hotel pick-up and transfer from Cusco to the trailhead at Inkintuyok Bridge in Quesiuno. The drive will take approximately 3 hours. Upon arrival, you’ll enjoy a hearty breakfast overlooking the bridge and load your gear on the horses. After breakfast, you’ll begin your hike uphill along a bubbling brook. As you ascend, you’ll be surprised by the herds of llamas and alpacas grazing in the highlands all around you.

As you hike, you’ll get incredible views of Ausangate Mountain and Glacier. You’ll hike through villages, interact with local residents, and experience all kinds of wildlife — including chinchillas! After approximately 3 to 4 hours, you’ll arrive at your campsite near the village of Llamachimpana just in time for lunch. Enjoy your meal, then take the afternoon to relax, hike nearby trails, take photos, or visit the town!

If the night is clear, stay up late and look up — the stunning, starry night sky is crystal clear.

Day 2: Trek from Llamachimpana to Rainbow Mountain
Wake up with a cup of hot coca tea, and watch a stunning sunrise over the valley. After breakfast, you’ll set out for Rainbow Mountain — a 2 hour hike uphill. The climb is challenging, but as you hike the ridge, you’ll get spectacular views of red mountains and the Ausangate glacier. You’ll arrive at Rainbow Mountain (16,400 feet / 5,000 meters), by mid-day.

Rainbow Mountain was formed when the Pacific and Atlantic tectonic plates collided, pushing millennia of rock and mineral layers up and sideways. Rainbow Mountain is a testament to the power of the Earth’s tectonic plates, and of the art-like beauty in nature.

Upon arrival, you’ll have plenty of time to explore the area, take photos. In the mid-morning, you’ll leave Rainbow Mountain and hike a moderate trail downhill and along a quiet road. After approximately 4 hours, you’ll stop where the road ends for a well-earned lunch. Your car will pick you up here and drive you back to Cusco. You’ll arrive at your hotel by approximately 7:00 pm.
