Highlights

  • Trek to the highest peak of the Peruvian Andes at Salkantay Mountain
  • Meet Quechua locals and view Incan ruins along the way
  • Experience Machu Picchu

Description

Trek to the sacred Salkantay Mountain — the highest peak of the Cordillera Vilcabamba, part of the Peruvian Andes. It also passes through Quechua communities and lesser-known Inca ruins on the way to Aguas Calientes on the third day. This itinerary is an interesting alternative for those who have not found spaces on the Inca Trail trek to Machu Picchu.

Duration

4 Days/3 Nights

Itinerary

Day 1: Transportation to Soraypampa – Huayracmachay

You’ll be picked up at 5:00 am for a scenic morning trek that begins in Soraypampa, towards the base of the Salkantay Moutnain. You’ll walk along the shore of the Apurimac River and cross the towns of Mollepata and Cruzpata before starting a 2 hrs steep ascent to Soyroccocha, just next to the impressive glacier of Salkantay. Continuing uphill, we reach the highest point of the trek Abra Huayracmacha. From this point, you’ll begin the descent into the so-called cloud forest past the remains of an ancient Inca path.

Camping overnight at Huayracmachay

Meals Included: Box-lunch, Dinner

Day 2: Huayracmachay to Lucmabamba

After breakfast, you’ll continue the hike with an easy downhill walk along the Salkantay River, enjoying the increasingly lush vegetation, passing waterfalls, passion fruit and coffee plantations. You’ll pass through the Chaullay settlement and the town of Colpapampa where the Salkantay River becomes the Santa Teresa River.

After a brief break, you’ll head down to the banks of the Totora River where you can relax in the thermo-medicinal waters. Later, you’ll follow the Santa Teresa River, passing the Coripacchi waterfalls and the Wiñaypoko settlement, to the Lucmabamba campsite.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3: Lucmabamba / Llactapata / Aguas Calientes

After breakfast, you’ll walk past banana, coffee, and avocado plantations on the way to Llactapata. You’ll also enter spectacled-bear territory and will have a good chance to see flocks of parrots. As you cross, the river, you’ll start climbing for 2-3 hours up to Abra Q’elloqasa where you will be greeted by a stunning view of Machu Picchu. Later, you will also enjoy an amazing view from the recently restored archaeological site of Llaqtapata of the Salkantay mountain.

Finally, you’ll take a 2-hour descent towards the Aobamba River through rich bamboo forests, orchards and coffee plantations before boarding a train to Aguas Calientes.

Overnight at Aguas Calientes Hotel.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4: Full Day Machu Picchu & Back to Cusco

After breakfast at the hotel in Aguas Calientes, you’ll catch an early 5:30 am bus to Machu Picchu for a full day excursion. Upon arrival, you will participate in a guided tour of the Citadel that visits the Main Plaza, the Circular Tower, the Sacred Sun Dial, the Royal Quarters, the Temple of the Three Windows, houses, warehouses, and a large central square. These are all connected by narrow roads and steps that are surrounded by terraces cut into the mountain side. After the tour, you’ll have time to stroll around the Archaeological Site at your leisure.
