Description

Salkantay Peru: This amazing trek will take you right under the sacred Salkantay Peru Mountain, one of the highest and most stunning peaks in the Peruvian Andes. Along the way to Aguas Calientes, you’ll pass through Quechua communities and visit lesser-known Inca ruins. On the last day, you’ll visit the impressive Sacred Inca city of Machu Picchu.

Itinerary

Day 1: Transportation to Sayllapata – Soyroccocha

You’ll be picked up from your hotel at 5:00 am. Before arriving to Sayllapata to meet the trip’s horses and horsemen, you’ll first stop in the town of Mollepata. From Sayllapata, you’ll start the ascent by foot, passing through Soraypampa and Salkantaypampa. Finally, you’ll end the day in Soyroccocha, just next to the impressive Salkantay glacier, where you will camp for the night.

Day 2: Soyroccocha / Collpapampa

After breakfast, you’ll start a 1 ½ hour ascent to the highest point of the trek, the Huayracmachay Pass. From this point, you’ll head down into the cloud forest where you can see the remains of an ancient Inca path. An easy descent along the Sallantay River will take you to Huayracmachay for lunch. In the late afternoon, you’ll arrive to the beautiful Collpapampa campsite with some natural hot springs to relax in.

Day 3: Collpapampa / Lucmabamba

In the morning, you’ll enjoy breakfast before continuing the hike with an easy downhill walking along the Santa Teresa River, surrounded by rich vegetation and coffee plantations. You’ll also pass the Coripacchi waterfalls and the Wiñaypoko settlement on the way to La Playa where you’ll stop for lunch. Finally, you’ll arrive at Lucmabamba in the afternoon where you will camp for the evening.

Day 4: Lucmabamba / Llactapata / Aguas Calientes

After breakfast, you’ll walk past banana, coffee, and avocado plantations on the way to Llactapata. You’ll also enter spectacled-bear territory and will have a good chance to see flocks of parrots. As you cross, the river, you’ll start climbing for 2-3 hours up to Abra Q’elloqasa where you will be greeted by a stunning view of Machu Picchu. Later, you will also enjoy an amazing view from the recently restored archaeological site of Llaqtapata of the Salkantay mountain.

Finally, you’ll take a 2-hour descent towards the Aobamba River through rich bamboo forests, orchards and coffee plantations before boarding a train to Aguas Calientes.

Day 5: Full Day Machu Picchu & Back to Cusco

On the last day of your Salkantay Peru adventure, you’ll have breakfast at the hotel in Aguas Calientes, before catching an early 5:30 am bus to Machu Picchu for a full day excursion. Upon arrival, you will participate in a guided tour of the Citadel that visits the Main Plaza, the Circular Tower, the Sacred Sun Dial, the Royal Quarters, the Temple of the Three Windows, houses, warehouses, and a large central square. These are all connected by narrow roads and steps that are surrounded by terraces cut into the mountain side. After the tour, you’ll have time to stroll around the Archaeological Site at your leisure.
Then, you will have time to participate in some optional activities such as climbing to Wayna Picchu.

In the afternoon you’ll take a train from Aguas Calientes back to Cusco where you will be brought back to your hotel.
