This Salkantay Trek 4 Days / 3 Nights is one of the best hikes of Peru. It takes you from Soraypampa to Patallacta and Machu Picchu, along the mountains of Humantay and Salkantay. You will start in the highlands of the Andes, where brown grasses cover mountainous terrain, and continue to lush jungle, where the Amazon begins.

You will have a fantastic experience following an experienced local tour guide and enjoying the meals of a professional chef as you camp under the stars.

Itinerary

Day 1 – Hike to the Top of Salkantay Pass for Incredible Views
Your Salkantay Trek 4 Days starts as we pick you up at 4:30 am and take you by private car to the beginning of the trek at a place called Soraypampa. As soon as you get there, you will enjoy breakfast, then start the hike. You will walk for 3 hours and 45 minutes on a magical trail between two snowy mountains to get to the lunch location.

After lunch, you will hike 45 minutes uphill to Salkantay Pass, elevation 15,091 feet (4,600 meters). Here, you can enjoy amazing views. Then, you will go downhill for 3 hours to get to the Huaracmacha campsite by 18:00 pm. In this scenic camp, you can use warm water to wash up, sip some tea, then enjoy dinner by 19:00 pm. The total hiking for today is 8 hours, 10 miles (16 kilometers).

Day 2 – Admire Gorgeous Waterfalls and Lovely Streams as You Hike through the Amazon
You will wake up at 5:00 am with coca tea and a good buffet breakfast. Then, you will walk downhill for 3 hours, entering the Amazon jungle and arriving to the lunch location, Chayhuay.

From here, the hike is gentle, passing by beautiful waterfalls and crossing wooden bridges over streams. You will see a variety of fruit trees such as granadilla and avocado, as well as coffee plantations. You will arrive to the campsite by 18:00 pm, which is at an altitude of 6,562 feet (2,000 meters). As you walk 9 hours, covering 11 miles (18 kilometers), the temperature will become warmer.

Day 3 – Reach an Amazing Lookout Point near Machu Picchu and Walk to Aguas Calientes
Wake-up today is at 4:30 am, so you can get started on a short bus ride to the Inca Trail. You will hike for 4 hours up to a lost Inca city which is covered by vegetation and has views of Machu Picchu. Then, you will go downhill for 2.5 hours past waterfalls to reach the lunch spot.

Lunch today is by the train station. After lunch by the train station, you will say goodbye to the cooking team and hike for 3.5 hours beside the train tracks to the town of Aguas Calientes. This hike includes views of Machu Picchu and giant trees. After a day with 6 hours of hiking, 7.5 miles (12 kilometers), you will stay in a hostel in Aguas Calientes.

Day 4 – Tour the Fascinating Ancient City of Machu Picchu
On the final day of your Salkantay Trek 4 Days, you will wake up at 4:30 am and either walk up to Machu Picchu or take a bus. Then, your guide will take you to a Machu Picchu viewpoint and show you the ancient city on a 2-hour guided tour. Afterward, you will have a couple hours of free time to explore.

When you are done, you will go back to the train station in Aguas Calientes. In the afternoon, you will ride the train to Ollantaytambo, then take a bus to Cusco, where you will be dropped off at your hotel. This is where your Salkantay Trek 4 Days comes to an end. The total walking today is 3.5 hours, 5 miles (8 kilometers).

  • Rain poncho/jacket, rain cover for your backpack, and extra plastic bags, especially in wet season
  • Original passport and ISIC student card (if applicable)
  • Extra money for things along the road (local organic coffee)
