The Salkantay Trekking Expedition packs every day with excitement, wonder and amazing views as you head along the path to Machu Picchu! Truly amazing views and exciting physical challenges on the trek to Machu Picchu make this tour a once-in-a-lifetime experience!
5 Days/ 4 Nights
Private transportation will pick you up in Ollantaytambo at 5:00am and drive about 4 hours to Mollepatato. In Mollepatato, the group will have a chance to stretch legs, meet your guides and porters, and a final chance to buy snacks for the trail. Once you’re ready, a truck will take you to Cruzpata, where the trek begins! The first leg is 4-5 hours and takes you to Soraypampa, where the group will camp for the night. Enjoy stunning views of glaciers, Salkantay, and Huamantay from your campsite 3,800 meters (12,467 feet) above sea level!
Day two begins with a hot and hardy breakfast at 6:30am. After breakfast, the group will begin its ascent to the pass – it will take around 3-4 hours to reach Abra Salkantay (4,620 meters / 15,157 feet). After a rest in Abra, you will begin the descent that takes you to Chaullay. During the descent, you will stop for a box lunch in a fabulous picnic location. The 3-4 hour descent will take you through three distinct climates, and has amazing views throughout. Tonight’s camp is at Chaullay (2,900 meters / 9,514 feet). Note that today will be the most strenuous of the trip.
Wake to the sound of roosters crowing and enjoy breakfast, before a short walk along the road to a trailhead, which leads to a pleasant 5 hour walk along the river. The trail will take you deeper into the jungle. Once the group reaches Playa (2,100 meters / 6,889 feet), you will have the option of continuing along the road on foot for 3 hours, or hiring a car to St. Teresa. In the afternoon, relax in St. Teresa, and enjoy an evening in the Cocalmayo hot springs.
Today you have several options! Choose either zip-lining, a tour of coffee plantations and botanical gardens, or simply a relaxed day. In the afternoon, a car will take you to the hydro-electric plant, and from there, it is a 2.5 hour walk along the train tracks to the valley below Machu Picchu, arriving in Aguas Calientes.
Enjoy the legendary city of Machu Picchu!
