Itinerary

Day 1: Explore the Amazon Refuge
Upon your arrival in Puerto Maldonado, your guides will pick you up and transfer you to the Tambopata River Port, where your Tambopata National Reserve tour begin.

You’ll take a 2.5 hour boat ride past the Tambopata National Reserve checkpoint, and enter the buffer zone of the 5,000 square mile (1.3 million hectare) protected natural area. Upon arrival at your lodge, you’ll be welcomed by the manager and provided with a brief presentation and safety information.

Enjoy a welcome dinner at the lodge before returning to river to scan the banks with headlamps in search of the notorious “red-eye shine” of massive caimans.

Day 2: Take a Boat to True Uninhabited Wilderness
After breakfast, set out for a nearby Canopy Tower,  just a thirty minute walk from your lodge. A secure staircase will lead you over 80 feet (25 meters) onto canopy platforms where you’ll encounter breathtaking panoramic views of the Tambopata National Reserve old-growth forest, as well as an abundance of toucans, macaws, raptors, and other canopy dwellers.

After lunch, transfer by boat 4.5 hours from Refugio Amazonas to the heart of the reserve — Tambopata Research Center. Near the midway point of your boat trip, you’ll cross the Malinowski River confluence and enter the reserve’s uninhabited nucleus.

Deep in the Tambopata National Reserve you’ll will stop at the Chuncho clay lick — attracting more large macaws than nearly any other clay lick on Earth. Watch dozens of macaws taking flight in in a rainbow of activity.

Upon arrival at the Research Center, the manager will welcome you and provide a short orientation and Tambopata Research Center tour. From there, you’ll take a short 2-3 mile (3-5 kilometer) hike winding from high overlooks to the lowlands where you’re likely to see howler and dusky titi monkeys.

After dinner at the lodge, resident scientists will lead a fascinating lecture and Q&A on macaws and the world-renowned “Macaw Project,” within the reserve.

Day 3: Experience the Macaw Clay Lick
On most sunny mornings year-round, dozens of large macaws and hundreds of parrots congregate on this large river bank in a raucous and brilliant spectacle. Hidden just 150 feet (50 meters) from the bank, you’ll observe macaw species and other parrots descend on the banks to ingest mineral-rich clay as the sun rises over the rainforest. After waking up with the parrots, you’ll return to the lodge for breakfast.

After breakfast, set out along the floodplain trail — a 3 mile (5 kilometer) loop through prototypical rain forest. Among the colossal trees, rivers, and ponds, you’ll search for brown capuchin, squirrel, and spider monkeys.

As you return to the lodge, you’ll stop at the pond platform. Here, you’ll likely spot outstanding waterfowl like the muscovy duck, hoatzin, and sunbittern, along with other species that call the pond home.

At night, set out for an optional night-hike. You’re likely to see and hear abundant frog species, and may see or hear other signs of active, though hidden nocturnal life.

Day 4: Hike the Reserve
Return to the Macaw Clay Lick in the morning to observe the macaws’ rowdy morning spectacle. Return the lodge for breakfast then set out along the Terra Firme Trail. Along the 3-mile (5-kilometer) trail you’ll encounter a strikingly different habitat, with thinner and smaller trees. You’ll walk along the outer limits of a nearby swamp in search of signs of the ubiquitous tapir.

After lunch at the lodge, set out along Palm Swamp Trail, where you’ll encounter aguaje palms that provide sustenance to an abundance of local life. The palms are one of the most important food sources in the rainforest — but commercial demand for the fruit as well as the excellent soil conditions where it grows have led to the rapid destruction of this habitat in much of the Amazon.

Day 5: Say Goodbye to your Tambopata Research Center Tour
Today, you’ll end your Tambopata Research Center tour and transfer back to Puerto Maldonado — on the river, you may spot multiple big cats, including jaguar. Upon your arrival to Puerto Maldonado, you’ll be transferred back to headquarters to pick up any luggage you’ve stored. The staff will take you to the airport for your onward journey.
