Day 1 – Drive to Capuliyoc and Hike through Apurimac Canyon
At 5:00 am, your Trekking Peru tour starts as we will pick you up at your hotel and drive you in our private van to Capuliyoc, elevation 9,407 feet (2,850 meters). The drive takes 4 hours and passes by rewarding views of lovely farming valleys and snow-capped mountains. Once you arrive to Cachora, you will meet the horsemen, who will pack all our equipment onto the horses. Then, you will hike through the Apurimac Canyon, past stunning mountains such as Padreyoc (18,387 feet / 5,571 meters). After that, you will hike for 3 hours down to Chikisca for lunch.
In the afternoon, you will hike for 2 hours down to the first campsite at La Playa Rosalinas. The total hiking distance for the day is 5 hours, 9 miles (14 kilometers).
Day 2 – Walk to Marampat and Enjoy Lunch Overlooking the Choquequirao Ruins
After an early breakfast, you will cross a bridge and walk for 4 hours all the way up to Marampata, where you will have some lunch enjoying the view of Choquequirao Inca ruins. After lunch, you will walk to the second campsite, which is just 20 minutes from the ruins of the fortress. You can see condors and enjoy the ruins well into the evening. The total hiking distance of the day is 6 hours, 10 miles (16 kilometers).
Day 3 – Explore the “Cradle of Gold” and Climb the Beautiful Choquequirao Pass
After a delicious breakfast, you will fully explore the ruins of Choquequirao, also called the “Cradle of Gold.” You will see Inca temples, palaces, ritual water fountains, llama sections, and the amazing ceremonial platform Ushnu.
In the afternoon, you will climb over a ridge to the stunning Choquequirao Pass, (10,814 feet / 3,277 meters). Then, you will descend for 2 hours to Rio Blanco (6,567 feet / 1,990 meters), the location of the third campsite. You will enjoy spectacular views of the canyons and Pinchiunuyoc Inca ruins along the way. The total hiking today is 2 hours, 5 miles (8 kilometers).
Day 4 – See Stunning Landscapes between Rio Blanco and Maisal
After a late breakfast, your Trekking Peru tour continues as you climb up to Maisal (10,814 feet / 3,277 meters), enjoying the variety of micro-climates and spectacular views of canyons and rivers. Finally, you will arrive to the fourth campsite. The total hiking distance is 5 hours, 6 miles (10 kilometers).
Day 5 – Walk on the Original Inca Trail and Reach Victoria Pass
The day’s Trekking Peru hike starts at 7:00 am as you walk uphill for 3 hours through semi-jungle via parts of the original Inca Highway. You will visit ancient mines on the way to reach Victoria Pass (13,700 feet / 4,170 meters). In the pass, you can appreciate the great canyons and spectacular snow-capped mountains of Sacsara and Qoriwanachina, and Pumasillo. Then, you will descend to Yanama (12,037 feet / 3,650 meters), which is the evening’s campsite. The total hiking distance is 8 hours, 10 miles (16 kilometers).
Day 6 – See Spectacular Mountain Peaks from Yanama Pass
This is a day of mountain peaks! Today, you will walk for 9 hours, 14 miles (21 kilometers). You will rise early to appreciate the chain of snow peaks that you can see from the first section of the day’s trek. Then ascent to the highest point of the trek: Yanama Pass (15,407 feet / 4,670 meters). The view from here is amazing as you will be surrounded by snowy mountains and impressive valleys.
Then, you will descend to Totora for lunch. Afterward, you will walk for 2 hours to Colpapampa (9,470 feet / 2,870 meters) to the campsite.
Day 7 – Hike in the Rainforest and Cloud Forest on the Inca Trail to Llactapata
Today, you will hike for 3 hours through the beginning of the rainforest, enjoying a myriad of flora and fauna such as orchids and birds. You can also see plantations for coffee, cacao, and fruit, especially as you get to the small town of La Playa (6,797 feet / 2,060 meters). There, you will have lunch and free time to rest. Then, you will climb uphill for 3 hours on the original Inca trail through the cloud forest, up to Puncuyoc Pass.
After that, you will keep hiking to the Llactapata Inca site (8,907 feet / 2,700 meters). This site is located right in front of the citadel of Machu Picchu. Here, you will stay in the campsite and enjoy panoramic and breathtaking views. The total hiking distance today is 9 hours, 13 miles (21 kilometers).
Day 8 – Watch the Sunrise over Machu Picchu and Walk to Aguas Calientes
After having a good breakfast, you will be ready to enjoy one of the highlights of the Trekking Peru tour: the sunrise over Machu Picchu. You will start by walking downhill for 2 hours, seeing coffee plantations and waterfalls along the way. After lunch, you will walk to Aguas Calientes through Machu Picchu National Park. You will be amazed by the iconic Machu Picchu surroundings and the wall around its Inca Citadel. After a total hiking distance of 9 hours, 9 miles (14 kilometers), you will stay the night at a hotel in Aguas Calientes.
Day 9 – Take a Guided Tour and Explore Machu Picchu, then Return to Cusco
After breakfast, you will leave the hotel and take a bus by 5:30 am up to Machu Picchu. Then, we will take you to an incredible lookout point, where you can enjoy the views and take photos. Afterward, you will have a guided tour and learn about the fascinating history of this charming place.
After the tour, you will have plenty of time for exploring more on your own, taking photos, and climbing Huayna Picchu Mountain or going to the Sun Gate. If you want to hike up Huayna Picchu, you must book tickets in advance. Then, your Trekking Peru tour ends as you head back to Aguas Calientes, take the train back to Ollantaytambo, then take a private car to Cusco, where you will be dropped off at your hotel.
