Day 1 – Go Mountain Biking to Santa Teresa
Your Vilcabamba Peru tour starts as you are picked up from your hotel by 5:40 am and taken in private transportation for an hour and 45 minutes to Ollantaytambo. This village is famous for its beautiful archaeological site. You will have breakfast here, then drive 45 more minutes to the mountain biking starting point, on the edge of the Amazon jungle.
After mountain biking for a couple hours, you will enjoy a boxed lunch, then continue biking to Santa Teresa village. This lovely village is surrounded by coffee and tea plantations and lush vegetation, such as mango and citrus trees. You will stay here for the night.
Day 2 – Hike the Original Inca Trail to Huancacalle and Tour Archaeological Sites
You will wake up at 5:00 am, have breakfast, and take a private car to the village of Huancacalle. Along the way, you will pass through beautiful valleys with coca bush farms, waterfalls, and wooden bridges. Have a packed lunch in Huancacalle, then hike to the stunning archaeological site of Vilcabamba Peru and the Ñustahispana, or White Rock.
The Vilcabamba Peru hike will be about 2 hours round-trip. Plus, you will have a tour and time to take photos at the archaeological site. Then, you will make your way along the original Inca trail, hiking on the ridge of a mountain, surrounded by outstanding valley views. You will arrive to the Huancacalle campsite by 18:00 pm, with is at an altitude of 9,843 feet (3,000 meters) and has electricity to charge your electronic devices. Today includes 2 hours of walking, 7 miles (6 kilometers).
Day 3 – Leave the High Jungle and Enter the Andes through Asuntina Mountain Pass
You will wake up at 4:30 am for breakfast, then hike uphill for 4 hours to Asuntina Pass, elevation 12,844 feet (3,915 meters). After lunch, you will continue on the well-preserved Inca trail, admiring the flora, fauna, and the spectacular snow-capped mountains. This hike takes you along a crystal-clear river, through the high jungle to the Andes. You will arrive to the Racachaca Campsite, also known as Hatun Pampa, by 17:30 pm. You will spend the night at an elevation of 11,811 feet (3,600 meters). The day includes 9 hours of walking, 11.2 miles (18 kilometers).
Day 4 – Hike through Three Mountain Passes and Descend to the Amazon Jungle
After breakfast at 4:30 am, you will hike 3 hours uphill to Yanococha Pass, elevation 13,878 feet (4,230 meters). Then, you will walk some more to arrive to a small lake also named Yanococha. After admiring the lake, you will climb to the second mountain pass, Tullu Tacanca, elevation 14,436 feet (4,400 meters). Along the way, you can see more small lakes and one big lake. This is a highland grass trail, with spongy moss. After going through Abra, the third mountain pass, elevation 14,600 feet (4,450 meters), you will descend for 30 minutes to the lunch spot.
Today is a difficult day for hiking, with many altitude changes. The beautiful high alpine lakes and snow-capped mountains are definitely worth the hike. After lunch, you will go downhill for 3 hours and enter the Amazon jungle. By 17:00 pm, you will take some Inca stone steps downward to reach the Mutuypata Campsite. We recommend hiking poles for this descent. Today has 9 hiking hours, 12 miles (19 kilometers).
Day 5 – Walk to the Village of Yanatile and Drive to Aguas Calientes
The day starts with breakfast and 4 hour hike. As you walk in the Amazon jungle, the temperatures will be warmer and you can see roaring water at the bottom of a canyon, coffee plantations, fruit trees, granadilla plantations, and hot pepper bushes. Finally, you will arrive the the village of Yanatile.
From there, you will take a car to the hydro-electric station, with some packed lunch on the way. Next, you will hike for 3 hours along the railway line to Aguas Calientes. This hike is at the base of Machu Picchu and the road is shaded by trees. Tonight, you will stay in a hostel. The day’s walking is 6 hours, 7 miles (12 kilometers).
Day 6 – Watch the Sunrise and Take a Tour at Machu Picchu
The final day has another early start with breakfast in the hostel at 4:30 am. Then, you will take a bus up to the ruins of Machu Picchu and go to a wonderful lookout point. Here, you can watch the sunrise and take in outstanding views. Afterward, you will have a 2-hour guided tour, then a couple hours of free time to explore. One option for your free time is going on a 2-hour round trip hike to the Sun Gate.
After your Machu Picchu adventure, you will take the bus back to Aguas Calientes, have some lunch, then take a 2 hour train back to Ollantaytambo. Your Vilcabamba Peru tour ends with a 2 hour drive back to Cusco, where you will be dropped off at your hotel.
