Day 1: Cusco -> Upis

Early in the morning, you will meet at your Cusco hotel to travel to Tinqi, the departure point for our Ausangate Circuit trek. In Tinqi, you’ll meet the muleteers and purchase any last minute snacks or supplies. To begin the hike, you will ascend for about 3 hours on a moderate incline to our first campsite, Upis. Along the way, you pass potato fields, small farms, and groups of grazing alpacas and llamas. As you approach Ausangate and its breathtaking glaciers, the air becomes cooler. Once you arrive in Upis in the late afternoon, you’ll have the option to enjoy the hot springs before dinner. Upis is located at 4,350 meters (14,271 feet) so be prepared for your first night to be a cold one!

Day 2: Upis -> Ausangatecocha

After an early breakfast, the hike continues with a climb to Arapa Pass at 4,750 meters (15,583 feet). The ascent will take approximately two hours, and cross through a scenic valley with little vegetation. As you ascend out of the valley, you will be gifted with panoramic views of the majestic Ausangate mountain and its surroundings. Next, you will descend a cliff that divides the mountain with views of different colored lakes, including Yanacocha (black lake). Break for lunch at Yanacocha. Finally, you will continue on to our campsite at Ausangatecocha at 4,600 meters (15,091 feet).

Day 3: Ausangatecocha -> Rainbow Mountain Vinicunca-> Illacocha

Today’s the day you cross wide valleys and colorful hills to get to Rainbow Mountain. Arrive at the astounding Rainbow Mountain by noon. You will have lunch here as we enjoy the splendid scenery and relax. The final leg of the hike is to Illacocha, where we will set up camp for the night.

Day 4: Illacocha -> Jampa

Today starts by ascending to the Palomani pass (5,200 meters / 17,000 feet) – the highest point of this trek. From the pass, you will follow the trail into the valley where we’ll rest as we eat lunch. During the afternoon, you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy views of the snow-capped Tres Picos and Puca Punta. You will continue through the wide green valley of Pampa Jutunpata up to the Jampa valley where you will camp overnight.

Day 5: Jampa -> Pacchanta

After passing through the small community of Jampa, you will head to this trek’s final pass, the Q’ampa pass. Along the way, you will enjoy views of many colorful lakes before we eat lunch by one of the most beautiful ones. From there, you’ll hike about two hours to the village of Pacchanta. In Pacchanta, you can relax in the thermal springs for a few hours, and even have a well-deserved beer! You will also set up camp near Pacchanta and have the afternoon open to explore the Andean village.

Day 6: Pacchanta -> Cusco

After breakfast, you’ll complete the last segment of our hike, an easy 1 to 2 hours to the village of Tinqi. The van and driver will be waiting for us there. You will be dropped off in the late afternoon at your Cusco hotel.

Trek through some of Peru’s most beautiful scenery! This route combines the famous Ausangate Circuit trek with a stop at Vinicunca, Peru’s incredible rainbow-colored mountain bordered by steep snow-capped peaks.

Spend six days and five nights in the immaculate, high altitude Andes. Take in views of Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) and Apu Ausangate which is covered in enormous glaciers, and colorful lakes. Along the way, we’ll visit remote villages and share the trail with curious alpacas.
