This half-day excursion will lead you back in time, to the pre-Columbian era when the Taino Indians ruled the roost in Puerto Rico. You will explore the caves, Cueva del Indio and Cueva Ventana that they used for special ceremonies and learn of the cultural meanings behind petroglyph murals.
Having been collected from your accommodation by your guide, you will head straight on your way to Cueva Ventana. Once parked up and ready to go, you will hike through some of the phenomenal flora and fauna unique to Puerto Rico. Your guide will explain some of your surroundings, including the magnificent geological properties of the Karst Region. You will take a couple of pauses on your way to Cueva Ventana, breaking to appreciate some of the other smaller caves which also contain petroglyphs which date back further than 500 years. When you ultimately arrive at Cueva Ventana, you will realise the meaning behind the name, as you appreciate one of the most stunning views of the island, as at 900 feet above sea level, this magnificent window looks out over the Arecibo River Valley.
Hopping back into the luxury SUV, you will journey to the extraordinary Cueva del Indio on the northern tip of the island. You will take a short hike to the beach where you will view impressive cliff-faces which line the coast, and which house the cave. This cave was formed underwater millions of years ago and used by Tainos as an exclusive ceremonial location. You will climb down the ladder into the cave and marvel at the hundreds of petroglyphs carved into the walls that encompass you. Your guide will lead you through the cave advising you on the ancient culture, art and religion of the Taino Indians of this region.
For the communities of indigenous people in the Caribbean (pre-Columbian era), caves represented a portal into a spiritual realm, as they believed that caves were where the Earth and all living beings originated from. This Karst region is also specifically extraordinary; during the Cenozoic era, the constant movement of the earth and tectonic plates has led to unique faults and fractures in this limestone rock. This means, you will be visiting rock formations and caves that are totally individual and one of a kind. Therefore, on this trip, you will be enveloped by history, nature and all the aspects which make Puerto Rico such a special place.
