Immerse yourself in Mayan culture and customs, as you explore two authentic villages either by foot or taxi.
Explore the charming towns of Santa Catarina and San Antonio with a local Mayan guide.
Start your two hour, downhill hike at 2,000 feet above the lake with breath taking views of the volcanic caldera, the three volcanos, and the Mayan villages surrounding Lake Atitlan. Descend into Santa Catarina, passing terraced fields of onion and garlic, maintained in the same way for centuries. Meet local farmers and learn about their farming techniques. Or drive instead of hike, sharing local taxis with Mayans from the villages. This gives you an opportunity to share in their culture.
Past Panajachel is Santa Catarina. A small village and your next stop. Explore women’s weaving cooperatives and see the process of textiles being made into table coverings, clothing, and bed covers. The colors used in Santa Catarina are vibrant blues, purples, and reds all woven into elaborate and beautiful designs. Next up is San Antonio, a larger village on a steep hillside, making walking a bit more strenuous. See terraced fields of onion and garlic as well as a particular type of ceramic design only made in this area. You can tour the factory and store if you desire. Both tours include art galleries, colonial churches, and a visit to a Confradia family, their purpose being to maintain the traditions of the Catholic saints. This particular Confradia family maintains shrines to the patron saint of Catarina.
