Considered to be the fourth highest volcano of Guatemala, Santa Maria Volcano has a staggering height of 3772 m. Located close to the city of Quetzaltenango, from its peak you will be able to see the beautiful view and observe other volcanoes of the country such as Volcan de Agua, Fuego, and Acatenango.
Explore the incredible natural wonder with a local and choose between a day hike, night hike, or a 2 day adventure. You will be able to see the eruptions of the active volcano of Santiaguito during your hike and understand the geology of the surrounding area. This hike is a difficult climb and travelers should be in good physical condition.
There are 3 options to climb this volcano:
Half Day Trek
You will be picked up from your hotel around 5:00 am and transferred to the starting point for the hike. We’ll trek as a group for between 3 to 4 hours as we ascend the volcano. From the top you’ll capture incredible views of neighboring volcanoes and enjoy a prepared lunch. Afterwards, we’ll start climbing down (around 2.5 hours).
2 Day / 1 Night Adventure:
Take things a bit more slow and enjoy your time to soak in the surrounding natural beauty. On this 2 day adventure you’ll spend the first day ascending up the volcano. After 4 to 5 hours of hiking we’ll arrive at our accomodations for the night. You’ll spent the night at local accommodation and experience the peace and quiet sleeping on the Santa Maria Volcano. After breakfast, we’ll start our descent down Santa Maria volcano and arrive back in town around 11 am.
You will be picked up from your hotel around midnight and start the hike in the dark of the night. Together, with your local guide, you’ll fight off drowsiness as you climb up Santa Maria Volcano for 3 or 4 hours. Depending on the timing, you’ll experience the sunrise from the top of the volcano and rest for breakfast. After you capture the incredible views you’ll start your descent down and arrive back in town around 9 am.
