Tajumulco Volcano is located in the lovely department of San Marcos, it is the highest of Guatemala and Central America with a height of 4,220 m above sea level. This is a truly beautiful trekking tour in which tour will be able to appreciate the wonderful view of the complete Guatemala’s volcanic line from its highest peak, as well as the Sierra of the Cuchumatanes. This tour has a moderate level and its only problem it presents is for people sensitive to altitude sickness (mal de altura). It’s usually done in two days, starting at Quetzaltenango, and we offer two options for this tour.
One or two days:
4 hours ascent / 3 hours descent
This is a one day trekking tour that starts from the lodging place on Xela at 4:00 am heading towards San Marcos, in this option a good physical condition is required, because we will walk between 4 to 5 hours, approximately, until we reach the volcano’s peak. The transportation may be public or private, depending on the weather, and we will be able to get wonderful views from the top of the volcano; returning the same day at 7:00 pm. Day 1: We start the first day at 6:00 am from the lodging place on Xela heading towards San Marcos, the ascent time will be between 3 to 4 hours approximately, until we reach our camping place on a height of 4,000 m, approximately.
Día 2: We will walk about 1 hour until we reach the peak of the volcano to appreciate the sunrise and the wonderful view Tajumulco offers, returning to Xela at 2:00 pm. This tour is made by public transport.
